Distribution of Dentists in the United States, Historical
Report: 1993–2001
Gives a summary overview of the
changes in the number of dentists by region
and state over the last eight years. This
report contains information that replaces/updates
the Distribution of Dentists in the United
States reports from 1993 to 2001.
Four categories of dentists are described in the historical report:
professionally active dentists, new professionally active dentists,
active private practitioners, and new active private practitioners.
Professionally active dentists are those whose primary and/or
secondary occupation is private practice (full- or part-time),
dental school faculty/staff member, armed forces, other federal
services (i.e., Veteran's Administration, Public Health Service),
state or local government employee, hospital staff dentist, graduate
student/intern/resident, or other health/dental organization
staff member. New professionally active dentists are those professionally
active dentists who graduated from dental school within the last
10 years.

Distribution
of Dentists in the U.S. by Region
and State
Annual report is the result of an annual
census of dentists, conducted
by the ADA. Report data represents ADA
member and nonmember dentists, professionally-active
dentists, and dentists who are retired
or no longer in private practice. Data
in table format by region and state,
with U.S. totals. Percentages included
where appropriate. Reports available
from the 1950's through present.

State
and County Demographic Report
Annually reports household and per capita
income, education and general population
data. Valuable for dentists who are establishing
their practices or for those planning
to move. Also contains dentist profile
including county-level estimates of the
number of dentists, breakdown by primary
occupation, specialty, age and sex, population
profile of county level and benchmark
data, current population estimates and
five-year projections. Report also includes
suggestions for evaluating a new practice
area. As State and County Demographic
Reports are custom-produced, please state
the name of the desired county(s) and
state when ordering. Please note that
these reports are produced on a per-county
basis; one report equals one county.

Survey of Dental
Graduates
Provides information on dental school graduates
one year out of dental school. Often compared
to other recent dental graduate information.
Annual data includes percentages of graduates
in each primary and secondary dental occupation,
gender and specialty, average debt balance
at graduation, regions where private practicing
graduates are located, and the number of
graduates licensed in each state and in one
or more states.

2002 Survey
of Regional Dentist Workforce Distribution
This report is based on survey responses
from the executive directors of 51 constituent
dental societies. The survey, conducted in
partial fulfillment of House of Delegates
Resolution 97H-2001, represents an effort
to consolidate information on the dentist
workforce within each state and how states
are approaching regional dentist workforce
issues. Comparisons by US Census region are
also included.
