Globalization and Dentistry
You cannot read a newspaper, watch TV or surf the Internet without seeing a reference to globalization. Some view it as a positive evolution—a key to future world economic development and prosperity, which is both inescapable and irreversible. Others regard it with hostility believing that it increases inequality within and between nations, threatens employment and thwarts social progress. Discover how globalization is affecting dentistry and how it impacts you as a dental professional. Learn More

The mission of the National Institute
of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) is to promote the
general health of the American people by improving their oral,
dental and craniofacial health. Through nurturing fundamental
research and the development of researchers, the NIDCR aims to
promote health, to prevent diseases and conditions, and to develop
new diagnostics and therapeutics. Within NIDCR, the Office of
International Health serves as the liaison with international
agencies and foreign organizations involved in global oral health
research. It also coordinates dental, oral, and craniofacial
research activities under agreements between the U.S. and other
countries, promotes strategies to build global oral health research
capacity, and supports collaborative research programs and protocols
in line with NIDCR's mission. The Global Health Council
Web site: www.globalhealth.org
Founded in 1972 by a group of concerned organizations, including
the ADA, the Global Health
Council is the world's largest membership
alliance dedicated to
saving lives by improving health throughout
the world. The Council's
mission is to ensure that all who work to improve health around the world have the resources and information
they need to succeed.
While many serious problems can be addressed inexpensively and
effectively with the right
knowledge, too often practical advances
in public health are not
widely shared. Through publications,
an annual international conference,
and research summaries the Council seeks to gather such knowledge and make it accessible for
those who can use it to save lives.
The Council also serves as a voice for the thousands of individuals
and organizations involved
in every aspect of global health, as
well as a large, growing
network of concerned citizens—in the
US and abroad—who view health as
a basic human right. More information about the Council, its publications, and its members are available
on the Web site.

is to strengthen national and local health systems and improve
the health of the peoples of the Americas, in collaboration with
Ministries of Health, other government and international agencies,
nongovernmental organizations, universities, social security
agencies, community groups, and many others. PAHO knows that
early interventions go a long way toward optimizing oral health.
The Regional Oral Health Program has been working with countries
to build sustainable, public-sector treatment capacity that will
meet the needs of undeserved populations. The chief preventive
component of the oral health strategy is its Multi-Year Plan
for fluoridation in the Americas, using vehicles like salt and
water to deliver fluoride and the introduction of low-cost effective
dental treatment like ART. There are many oral health documents
in English and Spanish in the PAHO Web site for further information.
